Forbes has a column up on country-by-country reporting today. OK, I should declare an interest: I wrote it. The argument is a simple one: country-by-country reporting pays for us all if we wants corporations to pay their fair share of the cost of bailing out government deficits. NB: note to those who argue companies can’t pay tax. If you’re right why do they work so hard to avoid it? And why do they claim when doing so that it’s the company that gets the saving?

Charity abuse – the sickness of tax avoiders

Another aggressive scheme sparks charity tax crackdown - Accountancy Age. Accountancy Age reports:

HMRC has foiled another charity tax avoidance scheme, leading to a governmental overhaul of the rules governing relief for charitable donations.

The scheme is the latest arrangement the taxman has nipped in the bud after the well-documented case against Vantis, which has seen two of its directors hauled to the High Court.

It’s not vey often I give air space to the Sovereign Society – a US based organisation promoting offshore – largely because most of what they say is quite ludicrous. The Crown Depenencies’ banks are on notice: it’s time to tell

FT.com / Personal Finance - IHT avoidance schemes face scrutiny. As the FT notes:

As part of the new measures to clamp down on tax avoidance, UK residents will also be obliged to tell the British tax authorities when they open certain foreign bank accounts.

The new reporting requirement will apply to UK residents opening accounts in “certain” offshore jurisdictions, with heavy penalties of up to 200 per cent of unpaid tax for those who fail to comply.
