A new report in The Economist goes to great lengths to detail the corrupt regime of ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, as well as the broader systematic corruption that has plagued the country since the end of the Soviet era.

Sitting in a guesthouse on the property, Anna Babinets, one of the founders of YanukovychLeaks, a website that archives the thousands of documents found at Mezhyhirya, talks of the “power of documents, of numbers, of knowing how politicians spend money”. Ms Babinets says that first walking through the gates of Mezhyhirya and discovering the detailed schemes that underlined Mr Yanukovych’s rule was a “fairy tale”. The details that have emerged since have led to new demands for transparency.

Since Yanukovych’s ouster, we’ve learned how financial secrecy tactics, including anonymous companies, may have allowed Yanukovych to funnel billions of dollars out of Ukraine. Investigations by Ukrainian journalists documented the stunning news that the former president’s multi-million dollar palace was owned, in part, by an anonymous company based in the United Kingdom.
